South Portland Police said they don't know where the needles have been coming from, but they said they think at least some of them were used to inject heroin. Police wanted to get the word out before someone got hurt.

Police plan to step up patrols around the beach in the meantime and are warning people not to pick up any needles they see on the beach. Instead, people should either tell the lifeguard or call police.

Detective Sergeant Edward Sawyer said, "We will either determine who's responsible for this, or they'll get discouraged and go somewhere else, but i don't think it's anything to be overly alarmed about."

Police say the people responsible could face drug possession charges. If you find a needle when a lifeguard isn't on duty or you have any information, call South Portland police at 799-5511.
